Will Ospreay recently spoke to Sports Illustrated about his decision of signing with AEW.

He said in the article that he met Tony Khan for the first time nearly five years ago, at RevPro High Stakes back in February 2019, just a few weeks after AEW was officially announced.

“At that time, Tony asked me what I wanted to do next in my career,” Ospreay said. “I told him that my focus was Japan, and he respected me for it. I’ll remember how he treated me. I also want to mention that was the only time I ever wrestled PAC in a singles match. I want to make it clear so we can go back and settle it between us.”

Ospreay had been crowned the NEVER Openweight champion in NJPW at the time after he defeated Kota Ibushi to win the belt at Wrestle King 13. He lost the title two months later to Jeff Cobb at the NJPW/ROH G1 Special in Madison Square Garden.

“People should remember this: since then, I have built trust and respect with Tony,” stated Ospreay. “That is very important to me. Tony didn’t need to do this when he asked me to work matches for AEW like I did at All In in Wembley Stadium this summer. He trusted me. It meant the world to him.

“Now that I am coming to AEW I trust him with Will Ospreay’s aura and character. Tony Khan has changed my life. “In return, I will deliver the best matches that I can.”

Full Gear announced Ospreay’s signing with AEW. He will also continue to wrestle in NJPW, as he has told SI.com is very important to him.

Ospreay said, “I need to be involved in New Japan somehow, especially with United Empire. “That’s very important to me. I grew up on the New Japan. “I’m not ready yet to let it go.”

“I’ve been everywhere because I’m always trying to improve myself.” I have this notion in my head that I will become stagnant if I take time off. I want to keep pushing. “That’s what I will do.”

Ospreay had a fantastic run of matches in the year 2023. Dave Meltzer has rated eight of his matches as five-stars and above this year. Ten of his matches received ratings between four and three quarter stars.

Ospreay has no plans to slow down, despite signing a new contract. The 30-year old says he will “up it” by 2024.

“Wrestling is like a strange meditation,” said Ospreay. “I don’t buy my own hype but I am confident that I can tear up with anyone right now. All I have done so far I have built myself. This is how I have grown and matured as a businessperson, and this is why I am so confident.

‘What I did last year, I will do better in 2024.’
