CM Punk, who will return to the ring at SummerSlam next month for the first time in January, told Denise Salcedo that he was mentally and physically as strong as he could be at this point in his career.
Salcedo met Punk at the San Diego Comic Con, where she spoke to him about various topics. She also discussed how Vince McMahon’s departure from WWE was one factor that helped “illuminate his way back”.
Punk said that returning to the UK was “never something I was longing to do”. It took a lot to make that path clear. The stars needed to align and there had to be full moon. “A lot of dominos had to fall in order for us get here.”
Later, he said: “Vince being absent from the picture…I believe probably illuminated my way. I think it was one of the most important things. It was both ways. It wasn’t I, it wasn’t him, but…there’s quite a bit of history here. All of a suddenly, one of us was removed from the equation. It changed a lot.”
Punk admitted that he was aware that his surprise return to the Survivor Series last November would be a big thing, but that it “ended up being way more of a deal than any of us imagined.” He also admitted that, as a performer he still wondered if fans would even remember him, and if his return would become “a thing.”
He said that everything had to be done the way it was done to make this moment in Chicago.
“If WWE had been the place it is now back then, I would never have left. “All the things that happened, the arguments, the butting heads, the feeling that you were injured and burned out, and that those in a management role weren’t paying attention, that doesn’t happen in the current environment,” he said.
“I think that what makes my return special is all the history and all the time past. Now that we’re all together, it’s a very happy moment for me. “I’m grateful to have been here,” he said.
He also said that August will be a busy time for him in terms of pursuing movie and acting roles through his new talent agency, Paradigm. Punk, who admits he’s not Dave Batista or John Cena, said he wants to have fun with cool people. He also said that there are many wrestlers who are interesting individuals and could make the move to Hollywood, depending on their ambition.
He said that the WWE schedule allows him to be flexible and free to do other things.
