Marshall reportedly felt AEW was moving in a NJPW-related way.
QT Marshall’s reasons for leaving AEW have emerged less than 24 hours after he announced he would be leaving by the end of the year.
Nick Hausman of Haus of Wrestling reported on Tuesday that Marshall believes that AEW will move in a direction “similar to NJPW” with a greater focus on in-ring vs. story-telling.
If true, this would be in line with Marshall’s statement in his announcement: “AEW has changed a great deal since 2019 and is headed in a new direction …”
Hausman reported that Marshall’s influence “declined quickly” after his friend and Nightmare Factory teammate Cody Rhodes left for WWE despite his position as Vice President of Show & Event Coordination. He wanted to be more of an in-ring wrestler than a coach. This was something he made clear.
Meltzer stating that in most cases, a landing site has been decided. He said that people have told him that they’re not sure that this is the case.
Meltzer said that many people at AEW knew for months about Marshall’s departure, while others did not. It wasn’t a secret. Meltzer’s contacts were very supportive and positive in their comments about Marshall.
Marshall is close to Rhodes but it’s not known if WWE will be his next destination. Hausman reported that Marshall’s friends believe he would prefer to be a WWE in-ring performer vs. Performance Center coach, since he already has his school.
“At this time, he doesn’t believe that WWE will let him wrestle and coach. He may be open to it if there was an option,” Hausman wrote.
Meltzer said Marshall is frustrated that he has been aired internal. Meltzer also stated that Marshall “wants” to be a wrestler star. He said he’d be shocked if Rhodes did not push for Marshall in WWE.
Marshall, the former AAA Latin American Champion wrestled 11 times this year for AEW, and five times for Ring of Honor.
