Tony Khan discussed the AEW storyline with Mariah and Toni Storm in a recent Sports Illustrated interview.
The AEW President revealed that he first contacted May about the idea after Double or Nothing in 2023, when May was still with Stardom.
“I reached out to her and told her I had an idea for AEW and that it was a plan long-term,” said Khan. “She responded to my email that night, and so it all began.”
Khan said that there had been some backlash over how May was initially portrayed in AEW as it was so different from what she was doing in Stardom.
Khan continued, “I saw something special in her and I asked her to be very different when she joined AEW.” “There was some backlash in the beginning, when people pushed back that she came to AEW as a big fan of Toni Storm. This was very different from what Stardom was doing. We’re now going to find out how and why she did this, and how in less than a single year she became one the biggest stars in WWE.
The storyline of Dynamite’s episode from last week ended with an important development. After winning the Owen Hart Cup May turned against Storm, bloodied up her with a shoe and then stood proudly over her when the show ended. May’s win at the tournament means that she will be competing against Storm for the AEW Women’s World Championship in All In.
Khan claims that he discussed his idea with Bryan Danielson before contacting May.
Khan said, “Bryan Danielson asked me, ‘Have You Seen Mariah?’ as we flew home from Double or Nothing. We were talking about wrestling, and what stood out to us. Bryan then asked, ‘Have You Seen Mariah?’ “I said that I had seen her and was amazed at how quickly she became one of the biggest stars in Stardom. We both agreed that she was very polished. “That’s when I asked Bryan whether he had seen All About Eve or Sunset Boulevard.”
Both films are from 1950s, and they deal with aspiring Hollywood actors conspiring to replace the mentors who have dominated the spotlight.
Khan said, “I went to Toni Storm with these films-All About Eve and Sunset Boulevard – because she had this larger-than life persona like Gloria Swanson and Bette Davis from All About Eve. “That’s ‘Timeless Toni Storm. She’s the starlet with the presence-backstage or in the ring or out of the ring – of one of those rare, old Hollywood stars. “This is the role Toni is born to play and she is absolutely amazing at it.”
Khan credits RJ City for helping with the creative aspect of the angle. He noted that he was also the only person at the office who had watched the movies.
RJ is my right hand, said Khan. “He was the only one in the office that had seen All About Eve, Sunset Boulevard and understood old Hollywood. He has been invaluable and incredible throughout this process. He has a great talent for wrestling and he used these movies as inspiration.”
Storm and May will continue on Dynamite tonight. AEW advertises that May will discuss her actions from last weekend on the show.
