Tomohiro Ishii will be staying in AEW for a longer period of time after missing the NJPW G1 Climax.
Ishii appeared on Dynamite Wednesday night, as he took part in a fatal four-way match between the number one contenders for the International title. PAC won and will now face either Will Ospreay, or MJF, for the AEW international championship.
Tony Khan sent a tweet out after Dynamite praising Ishii, and announcing that he would be with AEW the rest of the summer.
“It is so great to have @njpwglobal legend Tomohiro Ishii in AEW Wednesday night #AEWDynamite TONIGHT!” Khan wrote: “We love having Ishii in AEW.” “[And] he’s now going to stay with us here in @AEW for the rest summer 2024!”
Ishii is the first G1 player to have not competed since 2012. He participated in a qualifying tournament to determine the final two competitors for this year’s G1, but lost in the semi-finals.
The G1 starts on July 20 and runs until August 18.
Ishii, who was regarded as one of the best in-ring grapplers of his era by the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Hall of Fame, was inducted in 2023. He has made sporadic AEW appearances since the promotion began its working relationship NJPW.
