WWE Survivor Series review – Hey, that’s CM Punk
WWE Survivor Series review – Hey, that’s CM Punk in todays Show_Type news
Bryan Rose talks to us about Punk, and the other three hours from Survivor Series.
The WWE show was on Saturday but nobody will remember anything other than the last few minutes.
Guess what happened after weeks of speculation, despite all reports indicating WWE had no interest in bringing CM Punk to the WWE? CM Punk returned, much to Chicago’s delight and the joy of many on social media, who now feel vindicated by the reporters they knew deep down were wrong. It was a truly surprising moment in a time when those types of surprises are rare. I guess that for true believers, Punk’s return was not a surprise.
What happens next? Does Punk go to Raw now? SmackDown? What is the plan for WrestleMania? Who will be his first opponent? We’ll find out soon enough, but it’s a fascinating wrinkle in the current dynamics in pro wrestling, where WWE feels like a hotter product right now than AEW, who, perception-wise feels lacking in storytelling. It’s obvious which promotion is gaining momentum right now.
Punk’s comeback followed the men’s WarGames, which had an extremely simple formula: Make everyone wait for Randy Orton to return. As soon as everyone entered the arena, the heels began to beat up the babyfaces, and then started posing when ….Rhea Ripley appeared with Damian Priest’s Money in the Bank Contract. Orton’s music started playing and a very jacked Orton came out to do his trademark spots. Cody Rhodes gave a big RKO to JD McConagh, who was in the steel cage. He also gave Damian Priest a crossroads.
I wish these WarGames matches didn’t use the same weapons as in every WWE hardcore match. This crowd was pumped up for the entire match. You can’t say that this match failed. It was a huge hit.
Now, let’s move on to the rest:
# The Women’s WarGames was also relatively simple. The heels controlled until the babyfaces mounted a comeback and did cool stuff (Charlotte doing a moonsault from the cage! Becky Lynch put Bayley through the table! The winner was Becky Lynch. It was a great way to begin the show and a bad sign for Bayley who got the pin. The split is inevitable, but when? IYO SKY was absolutely nuts for spotting the trash can.
# One of my biggest issues with The Miz & Gunther is that they booked the match as if it was a competitive match. Miz kicked out the powerbomb finish. To that I say no. I didn’t think this would be squash or that Miz would have zero offense, but I had an idea of this match, and it was completely different. I couldn’t believe it. Sorry, but I can’t believe that THE MIZ could have a match with Gunther. To be fair, the match was not bad, especially due to the crowd who ate all of Miz’s nearfalls at the end.
# Santos Escobar beat Dragon Lee in a match that I thought was good, especially towards the end. I thought Escobar’s finish was flat. He hit the phantom in the middle to win. I’m not sure why you would have Dragon Lee lose when he was highlighted the last few weeks on SmackDown. Escobar did not deserve to lose either, as the main event in the future will be Rey Mysterio against Santos Escobar. The question is why they replaced Carlito at the last moment with Lee.
# Rhea Ripley defeated Zoey stark. This is all there is to it. I thought it was good for a while, but they didn’t have enough time to make it anything substantive. I think that one of the issues with this match was that no one expected Stark to win. Unlike the Intercontinental Title match, where people bought in Miz’s nearfalls and they didn’t do so here. Ripley is just a hold-up until they want the Nia Jax and, presumably the Becky Lynch matches.
Survivor Series is over! It was only a two-match show, but both matches were great, so I’d give it a thumbs up. The next WWE review is 9 weeks away, for the Royal Rumble.
