Jamie Kellner, former head of Turner Broadcasting, dies at 77 in todays Wrestling news

Jamie Kellner has died. He was the television executive that put an end to WCW.

Variety reported that Kellner passed away Friday at his Montecito home at the age 77. In the television world, Kellner is most known for helping launch the Fox and WB channels. However, in the pro-wrestling world he’s best known for canceling WCW programming on Turner networks in 2001 after becoming the head of Turner Broadcasting.

Kellner, who succeeded Ted Turner in the role of head of broadcasting at TBS and TNT, cancelled WCW programming shortly after he took over. Fusinet Media, which was originally set to buy the struggling company, pulled out of the deal. This allowed Vince McMahon to purchase WWE and change the face and style of pro wrestling.

WCW held its final Nitro and Thunder episodes in March 2001. Although initial plans were to keep WCW a separate company, these plans were eventually changed to include WCW (and ECW in the future) as part of an invasion angle for WWF television. By November, the storyline was over, and the WCW/ECW Alliance had been written off.

In an article by Variety, he was credited with “The Simpsons”, “Married… With Children”, “Cops”, “In Living Color”, 21 Jump Street”, Dawson’s Creek”, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”, “Gilmore Girls”, “7th Heaven”, “Felicity” and more. He retired in the early 2000s.
