Tony Khan, AEW’s head, says that the best thing they did in their first five-year period was the way they handled the retirement of Sting and the final years in the ring.
Khan told Bleacher Report that he “didn’t feel that his previous run was what he wanted.”
“I don’t believe he had an excellent experience with WWE when he competed previously. He wanted to do something completely different. Khan said that when I first spoke to Sting, the singer was interested in making a comeback. But I don’t believe Steve (Borden), ever imagined it would result in a legendary three-year run of wrestling.
Sting’s last match was at the March Revolution, where he & Darby allin successfully defended their AEW Tag team titles against the Young Bucks. The 65-year old was undefeated for 28 tag team matches during his three-year career. The night was a huge financial success for AEW in terms of both live attendance and pay per view purchases.
Khan said that the match to him was “the greatest send-off ever in professional wrestling.”
Khan said, “Sting is one of the best wrestlers in history and we were lucky to have him at AEW.”
