TNA star Joe Hendry said he felt “total confirmation” from the crowd’s reaction to his WWE NXT debut.
Hendry, Frankie Kazarian and other TNA stars were entrants into a 25-man NXT battle royal this week as part of the growing relationship that exists between WWE and TNA. Hendry received a huge response from the audience, who sang along with his theme music. The song has gone viral on social media.
Hendry was a guest on Busted Open Radio’s Thursday episode. He was asked during the interview if he expected the response he would receive from the NXT fanbase to be so big. Hendry said that it was beyond his expectations:
“I think that one of the benefits of it happening so fast is that I didn’t have time to overthink this aspect of it. To be honest, it has exceeded all expectations. In all ways, I wanted the camera to shake when the crowd reacted. I had a sense of deja vu – I started to think, “Ok, this might be a big moment here” when people who worked at the PC and other wrestlers, stars, were talking about my music. This made me think. You know, some of the producers said they were expecting an enormous reaction. I started to feel like more people knew about me and my act than I thought.
“I didn’t believe it would be over. It’s hard to process. It’s all so new and I haven’t had the time to process it. Everything has happened so quickly. It’s amazing, but it doesn’t seem real. I feel like it’s total confirmation. I’ve been doing music for 10+ years without success. Then I got a song in the charts, and I thought, “damn, that’s validation.” And then I went out and got that reaction.
“I had a 40-minute nap, and when I woke up JBL said that my stuff was some of the best he’d seen in years. I’m like, “Wowah.” He was the champion when I first started wrestling, you see? It’s surreal and awesome and wonderful. I hope everyone gets the chance to experience their dreams like this.”
Hendry was eliminated in the battle royal when the other participants ganged him up. This may not be his last appearance in the WWE-TNA cross-over. Hendry, angry at how he was eliminated, said in a WWE post-match video that he could appear on any show he wanted.
Hendry was a former TNA Digital Media Champion. Hendry was a member of the Ring of Honor team when ROH was owned and operated by Sinclair Broadcast Group.
