Shawn Michaels said that adding another title to NXT’s women’s division is “an easy call.”
The inaugural Women’s NXT North American champion was crowned on Battleground Sunday night. Kelani Jordan defeated Sol Ruca in a ladder match, Lash Legend, Jaida Park, and Fallon Henley to become the inaugural Women’s NXT North American Champion.
Michaels stated in an interview with Sportsnet that it was only logical to have a women’s championship, since NXT already had a men’s North American championship. He believes that the NXT Women’s Division has enough depth to support two singles titles.
Michaels credited WWE for finding college athletes. Michaels also praised athletes for their ability to adapt quickly to pro wrestling even if they were not familiar with it before.
“I don’t know how else to put it, but there are so many studs out there. I don’t mean to create any kind of competition or negative atmosphere with the men. It’s amazing to see some of the talented and athletic women out there. Michaels said that it is amazing how quickly these women adapt to this new sport, especially if they haven’t grown up watching or learning about it.
“It is one of those things. It’s a term that gets thrown around, but it is true. It has just happened organically. Our women, as do all women, are on the same playing field as the men. It was only right that we had a North American men’s champion, we should also have a North American women’s champion. NXT clearly has a roster with the depth to sustain this. It was a simple decision for me. “I am very proud of our women’s division, but also of all the women who come through in NXT.”
Jordan (real name Lea Mitchell), was a gymnast at Michigan State University before signing with WWE in the year 2022. Next Tuesday, she will defend her Women’s North American Championship in a match with Michin on NXT.
The other title in NXT’s women’s division is currently held by Roxanne Perez, the NXT Women’s Champion.
