Drew McIntyre on the 10-year anniversary of WWE release in todays Wrestling news
Drew McIntyre left WWE 10 years ago.
McIntyre posted a reflection on the anniversary of the day in a post on social media. He noted that his name did not appear in the headline for WWE.com’s article about the roster cut that day.
McIntyre says, “Brodus Clay and Evan Bourne were released, as well as Teddy Long, Curthawks, and many other WWE Superstars,” in the video below. “That was 10 Years ago today. I am not even in this picture.
“It was the best thing to happen to me 10 years ago because I found myself back here in ICW. I found myself as an performer, I found myself as man, I grew my business outside of WWE and 10 years later I main evented Clash at The Castle. Not bad for an ‘other. ‘”
Other names released that day include JTG (now known under the name Tonga Loa), Jinder Mahal (now known under the name Aksana), Yoshi Tatsu and referee Marc Harris.
McIntyre was with WWE for nearly seven years when he left in 2014. He spent almost three years away from WWE before returning.
McIntyre was promoted to a full-time member of the main roster in 2009, and Vince McMahon dubbed him a future champion. By the time he was released, McIntyre had been a 3MB member for almost two years and was a long way from the world title picture.
McIntyre, who was let go by ICW, returned to the promotion and also performed for EVOLVE Wrestling and TNA Wrestling. He is a two-time ICW champion and was inducted in the promotion’s Hall of Fame. He also won the EVOLVE World and TNA World titles.
McIntyre’s WWE return was first announced at NXT TakeOver: Orlando, in April 2017. He signed a three year contract to stay with the company in late April 2024.
