NJPW announces G1 Climax tournament format in todays Wrestling news
NJPW has released details about this year’s G1 Climax Tournament.
The tournament will begin on July 20 and return to a block format of 20 players. The participants will be announced during the New Japan Soul Tour on June 16. Only 18 of the 20 participants will be revealed. The final slot for both blocks will be determined by a participant selection tournament, with the finals taking place on 5 July.
The block champions will also be determined differently this year. NJPW’s official website states:
This year, the top three finishers will advance. The second and third place finishers in Makuhari will compete on August 15, while the top scorer receives a bye into Ryogoku on August 17. The semifinals will determine the overall winner of each block to compete in August 18.
The tournament last year was divided into four blocks, each with 32 wrestlers. Tetsuya Nito won the G1 Climax 32, beating Kazuchika Ohada in finals.
