NJPW releasing Strong titles exclusively in USA shows in todays Wrestling news
Hiroshi Takahashi has commented on what the future holds for the NJPW Strong titles.
The championships were defended primarily on NJPW events in the United States but also on a few other shows in Japan and elsewhere. Eddie Kingston defeated KENTA to win the Strong Openweight belt last summer at the Independence Day show in Korakuen Hall. Stephanie Vaquer, who won the NJPW Strong Women’s title at a Stardom Show at Korakuen Hall last March, also defended it in England at a RevPro/CMLL Fantasticamania event in England.
Tanahashi told NJPW1972.com recently that he wanted to clarify the roles and responsibilities of the NJPW titles. This included making the Strong belts exclusively available at shows held in the United States.
Tanahashi said:
“We want to clarify and elevate the status of each championship belt by taking into consideration the opinions of both wrestlers and fans.” The NJPW STRONG Championships, which were originally defended exclusively on American events, will be restored in various forms.
Tanahashi continued:
“First of all, we’d like to make the STRONG title exclusive to Americans. There have been many new titles in recent years, and I think it’s important for both wrestlers and fans to know what championships they are aiming for. Each title can play a different role in different events. But we want the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship consistently to be the peak, and for those roles to take place afterward.”
Tom Lawlor, a member of our team, was the inaugural NJPW Strong Openweight champion. He won the belt by defeating Brody King in New Japan Cup USA 2020 finals.
In a triple-threat match, the NJPW Strong Tag Team Championships as well as the IWGP Tag Team Championships are being defended on Sunday at NJPW Dominion. Three teams will compete in the match: Strong Champions El Phantasmo and Hikuleo, IWGP Champion KENTA & Chase Owens and Hirooki goto & Yoshi Hashi.
