NJPW owner Takaaki kidani believes his promotion and AEW “absolutely” are on an equal footing in their partnership.

Hiroshi Takahashi, NJPW’s president for the first six months, held a press conference Tuesday to discuss his plans for the company’s growth. He outlined a ten-point plan. NJPW’s ties with AEW were one of them. Tanahashi stated that he spoke to Tony Khan in Las Vegas and discussed ways NJPW and AEW could continue to collaborate.

Kidani, who also spoke at the conference, described NJPW and AEW’s relationship as positive. He said NJPW couldn’t ask for a more perfect partnership at this time.

Kidani said, “That is not correct.” He believes that both NJPW and WWE have different strengths. He cited NJPW’s tradition and history as one of its strengths, along the way NJPW develops new talent:

“We have a positive relationship with AEW at the moment, and it has room to grow. We can’t discuss certain things just yet, but it’s a topic that could involve other departments at Bushiroad.

“I think this relationship has settled down into something that is a lot more stabile in the long term, and that’s because Tony Khan has a deep appreciation and fandom for NJPW. He is a huge fan of 90s wrestlers like Hase and the Steiners. He’s a huge fan and both he, and his father, have incredible business acumen. Tony Khan’s dad started out making Toyota bumpers and grew his company eightfold in 10 years. The Khans’ success is not limited to wrestling, but also includes American Football and Premier League. With their knowledge and affinity for Japan, they can do a lot in the future. I don’t believe NJPW could have asked for a better partnership right now.

“Having said that, it is a perception that NJPW has been treated as a lesser brand or that AEW looks down on NJPW. The economics are a part of the reason for the perception that NJPW is behind. The truth is that AEW and NJPW have different strengths. NJPW has a lot to offer that AEW does not, from the development of talent, to a traditional and historical perspective. There’s so much we can do and, while many of the details aren’t something that we can discuss at this time, there is a great deal we will do. NJPW’s inferiority is not true. We are on equal footing and we will prove that in the near future.”

Kazuchika Ospreay and Will Ospreay, both former NJPW employees, have signed full-time contract with AEW in the last few months.

Jon Moxley is one of AEW’s top stars and the current IWGP World Heavyweight champion for NJPW. Moxley defends the title this Sunday against EVIL, in a lumberjack bout at NJPW Dominion.

On Sunday, June 30, AEW & New Jersey Pro Wrestling will combine forces to host their Forbidden Door pay per view in Long Island, New York. This is the third consecutive year that the event has been held.

Here are all 10 points that Tanahashi detailed in his plan for growth:

  • Talent discovery and development
  • Elevating the value of title belts
  • Reducing/eliminating outside interference
  • Increasing the prominence and status of NJPW Hontai (the group of wrestlers affiliated with main NJPW instead of a different faction)
  • Strengthening ties with Stardom
  • Strengthening ties with AEW
  • Improving the live fan experience
  • Improving NJPW World
  • Improved treatment of personal information (after NJPW lost a USB drive that contained some personal information of fan club members this April)
  • NJPW sponsorships (improving relationships with current sponsors and introducing new ones)
