Cole offered to replace MJF, who was injured during the Zero Hour preshow.
Despite a period of time when it seemed he would not be able defend the AEW World Title, MJF appeared and successfully defended his gold in the main Event of Full Gear with a win against Jay White — all while Adam Cole was by his side.
After a long match that centered on MJF’s knee injury, White stole the belt from the champion. The champion won the match and took possession of the belt after countering a Blade Runner with the Dynamite ring to pin White.
The referee Bryce Mitchell was knocked out, which gave Cole the chance to offer the ring but White got it first. Cole tried to hit White with a Ring of Honor Tag Team belt, but White grabbed it and hit MJF. Cole had considered giving up on MJF earlier, as he was in a leglock.
The Devil character, who has appeared on AEW TV in the past few weeks, did not appear on screen.
Earlier that night, on the Zero Hour Pre-show, MJF had been taken out by The Gunns, after he and Samoa Joe had successfully defended the ROH tag team titles, causing MJF to injure his knee. As he was being taken away in an ambulance, he shouted at Cole not to let them take his ROH Tag Team title.
Cole offered to defend the title later for MJF, as White had a stipulation in his storyline that he would be champion if he did not get a shot at Full Gear. Cole was ready to start the match and came out, but MJF arrived in the ambulance he had been taken out in.
On Sunday, MJF celebrates a year as champion – the longest reign of any World title in the company. Saturday marked his tenth defense of the title and his first match against White, who is still searching for his first AEW gold.
