WWE addresses the controversial finish of the King of the Ring Finals in todays Wrestling news
WWE has released a video that addresses the controversial manner in which its King of the Ring Tournament ended.
Gunther was crowned the King of the Ring on Saturday after he defeated Randy Orton in finals. The match went as planned, except for an unintended finish in which Orton’s shoulder was accidentally raised while Orton was pinned.
Orton marketed storylines of knee and back injuries during his match against Gunther. He scored an RKO at the end of the bout, but was unable to get leverage on the cover because of his injured knee. Gunther trapped Orton with a crucifix. The referee clocked three, but Orton was clearly holding his shoulder up.
WWE posted an interview with Paul Levesque, addressing how Gunther vs. Orton concluded. Levesque said that the referee’s ruling is final, and Gunther is the King of the Ring. However, he is sure that Gunther would like to face Orton in the future again to prove he is the better man.
“Coming here and seeing what you saw, I saw exactly the same thing. I saw exactly what everyone saw. I saw what everyone saw. Levesque said, “It didn’t seem to be a controversial issue at all. It just seemed that Randy Orton’s left shoulder wasn’t down.” “But I will say this: The referee’s ruling is final. Gunther, your King of Rings.
“I want to see it again, especially after what I witnessed tonight.” I think Randy Orton should have another chance at that. Gunther will, if I knew him, want to try again to remove the controversy — to remove the asterisk from the page that says King of Ring for him. I think he’ll want to prove that he’s better than Randy Orton.”
Levesque did not say when the potential Gunther-Orton match would take place. He said that Orton will need “a moment or two” to be ready to return into the ring.
Levesque said, “I’ve seen Randy back here and he looks pretty bruised.” Both his knee and back. I think he’ll need a few moments before he’s ready to fight again with Gunther. But when he’s ready, let’s go.”
Gunther will be able to compete for the World Heavyweight Championship at SummerSlam if he wins King of the Ring. He will face either Damian Priest, or Drew McIntyre to defend the title. Priest will defend against McIntyre in Scotland at Clash at the Castle next month.
Nia Jax, Queen of the Ring’s winner, will also be competing for the WWE Women’s Championship at SummerSlam. Levesque was at King & Queen of the Ring to present Gunther and Jax their crowns.
