Tony Khan believes that social media is a healthy way to encourage competition between wrestling companies.
During a recent appearance on The Rocker Morning Show, WRKR 107.7, the AEW President was asked if AEW and WWE were taking shots at eachother similar to the way WCW and WWE fought during the Monday Night War.
Khan said:
“I do believe that in the 90s a lot of this helped fuel the wrestling industry, but it was a different time. There wasn’t a lot of online activity, and not everyone was online all the time. It was a different time in wrestling and for sports fans, I believe. It’s different for sports, but I believe that these rivalries and debates are healthy for sports. I also think it’s important for wrestling fans, for better or worse. It’s a great way to keep up with the shows, and I love that. I love promoting shows online. I know our wrestlers are very socially engaged and it makes for healthy competitiveness, I think.”
Khan, in an interview with NFL Network, referred to WWE as a “really, really evil juggernaut” while wearing a neck brace, and selling a TK Driver he recently received from the Young Bucks. Khan also called WWE “the Harvey Weinstein of Pro Wrestling”. Khan later told TMZ that “his comments got tons of coverage for AEW.”
Khan has spoken about AEW’s philosophy of being a “challenger brand” in the past. In 2022, he said that Warner Bros. Discovery gave him a guide on how to become a “challenger brand”, similar to the way Pepsi challenges Coke.
