Copeland spoke to Chris Van Vliet.

Adam Copeland almost signed up with AEW before his WWE return in 2020.

Copeland told Chris Van Vliet that he was “really close to” joining AEW in late 2019.

Copeland said that:

When I first spoke to AEW I was not yet cleared. We talked about it as if we were the bosses in each video game level. I was still not cleared by the company doctors, correct? Once all those clearances started coming, I thought, Oh, now this is real. Okay. Before I did anything I had to go and get the final clearance required for either company. But I had already negotiated with everyone. I said, “Okay, here is where I am, here is what I have been told I can achieve, and I started the process.” Vince said, “It’s got to be done here” when I went to WWE and sat down with him. It was at that point that I viewed the equity and felt like it would be difficult to start again, especially after being away for nine years. It felt like I didn’t have to worry because at least with WWE, that was one thing that was off the table. I can go back and explore the history of this particular character. I feel that it should have happened there at first. I do, even if it’s just for that Royal Rumble moment before the pandemic struck and the feeling and experience that I am happy with the way things turned out.

Copeland also was asked about the possibility to extend his in-ring life if AEW offered him a contract renewal.

He replied:

I want to keep performing at an acceptable level, and more importantly, one that I am proud of. I don’t want it to be a situation where I am struggling to do something and it is like pulling my teeth to get things done. I don’t like to do that. Thankfully, my career has brought me to a place where I no longer have to do this. I do this because I love it.

Copeland said that he didn’t want to miss out on spending time with his family, but he also hoped that his daughters would see the hard work that he was putting in.

Copeland continued.

I also think – and I’ve spoken to the girls about it – that they will see the work ethic that I put in even though I do not have to. I hope that they can see that, and that it rubs off on them and that they learn from that.

I want to be there for them for everything. I’ve managed to be there for the Shakespeare plays, run drama club with Beth, and take Lyric to tonight’s audition. I can still be there. I haven’t forgotten a birthday. It’s just about balancing both. It’s possible.

Copeland defeated Christian Cage, his longtime friend, in the main event at AEW Dynamite in Toronto. Copeland was asked if Cage was doing the best work in his career at this time.

I think so. It’s because I feel like he had been limited before. I think that you will continue to hit the glass ceiling, and some people will break through. But I don’t believe it was ever intended for him to break though, and this is frustrating.

When asked if Cage often mocked wrestlers who had dead relatives, Copeland replied:

And I think it was a happy mistake. I think that so many things end up working. It was a happy accident, and then you think oh well, if this person is that. I have never met my father, so this is a new experience for me. Are you kidding? He’s going to have a ball with this.
