WWE’s first ever PPV/PLE in France was a financial success for the company.
During the event it was announced that Backlash had broken the record for the biggest arena gate in WWE’s history (excluding stadiums). The Backlash event took place at the LDLC Arena, in Lyon, on Saturday. The venue hosted Friday’s SmackDown. It was the highest-grossing SmackDown ever.
Michael Cole announced, “This is the biggest gate in WWE history.” “Thank you, Lyon. “Thank you, France. “Thanks to everyone watching at home.”
Money in the Bank 2023 at The O2 Arena in London, which drew $3.3 million in gate revenue, was the previous record holder for WWE’s biggest arena gate.
Lyon was a hotbed of SmackDown and Backlash fans. WWE’s new policy is to hold non-big five PLEs in locations outside the United States/Canada. The upcoming WWE events include King & Queen of the Ring (Saudi Arabia, May 25), Clash at the Castle (Scotland, June 15), and Bash In Berlin (Germany, August 31).
