Heyman announced the news on behalf of Reigns in a backstage conversation with Kayla Braxton, at the top of SmackDown. He framed it as Reigns stepping down so as to not “hog the spotlight” during the first round of draft due to the fact that Reigns does not have immediate plans to return.
Cody Rhodes won the Undisputed WWE championship on night two of WrestleMania40 earlier this month, ending Reigns’ reign as Universal Champion. He has not appeared on WWE programming since the loss.
