The Rock’s WWE contract is revealed in more detail in todays Wrestling news
An exhibit from a SEC filing dated February 2024 found new life on Tuesday.
The Rock’s WWE contract, which he signed when he joined the TKO Board in January of this year, has now been revealed.
Brandon Thurston, of Wrestlenomics, did some digging on Dwayne’s contract which was published as a exhibit in February this year with WWE’s Annual Report.
Here’s a few of the highlights from what Thurston found in addition to some other notes:
- The contract allows Johnson, with WWE’s consent, to hire “third-party service providers in connection with the development of concepts, scripts, and storylines”.
- Johnson’s Seven Bucks Entertainment will be reimbursed by WWE for the costs incurred by these service providers. The contract named one such person, but the name was redacted. It could very well be former WWE writer Brian Gewirtz, a Seven Bucks executive who has been a longtime Johnson colleague.
- The deal includes $30 million in TKO equity (the Johnson Equity Award) that vests over a period of time until the end 2025. The majority of this award will be distributed by the end 2024.
- Johnson’s equity includes a portion of his name, likeness, and “certain other Intellectual Property Rights” to WWE, which can be used in connection with certain categories licensed products related to professional wrestlers for up to ten years, subject to certain termination rights.
- Johnson must approve any use of the Rock’s IP, including his catchphrases and all of his other famous phrases, on political ads, alcohol ads, tobacco ads, marijuana ads, porn ads, or pop-up advertisements.
- Johnson will continue to get yearly royalties on the sale of products that use the IP mentioned at the end of 2023.
Cody Rhodes was the next opponent he faced after his return match at WWE WrestleMania 40. This set up a future confrontation that could be a long time away. Johnson is currently filming A24’s “The Smashing Machine”, before moving on to production of Disney’s live-action Moana movie.
