Swerve Strickland is the first person to ever call himself AEW World Champion, after he defeated Samoa Joe at Sunday’s AEW Dynasty Pay-per-View.
Strickland’s pin came when he hit a second Swerve Stomp from the top rope, becoming emotional before he took off.
Strickland is the first African-American World champion of AEW, their 11th World champion overall, and their eighth unique World champ.
His quest for the title began when he failed in his attempt to reach the finals of last December’s first Continental Classic. He went to a 30-minute drawing with Hangman Page in February after six straight victories. He was in a three-way for the title with Page and Joe at March’s Revolution, but Page robbed him of his chance to win it.
Strickland earned the shot after he defeated Konosuke Takeshita late in March.
Joe’s 113 day reign with the title comes to an end with three successful defenses, dating back to Worlds End last December when he beat MJF for his title.
Strickland survived the physical Joe, who hit a Muscle Buster outside the ring, and then inside the ring.
Strickland set the ending up by jumping over Joe on the top rope. He then hit a power-bomb and the second Stomp to win.
