Dustin Rhodes recently spoke with Sports Illustrated.
Dustin Rhodes says his brother, Dustin Rhodes, went from superstar to megastar during WWE WrestleMania 40.
He told Sports Illustrated recently that watching Cody Rhodes defeat Roman Reigns to win the WWE Championship reminded of watching his father Dusty Rhodes celebrating after winning a championship.
Dustin’s comment about Cody winning the title:
It brought me back to the past. I remember my dad celebrating with all the men and champagne after he had won. I remember him bringing the belt home. It was amazing, and it brought me back to that time.
It was very emotional to watch Cody. I enjoyed the journey they took us on. I watch and study everything. To see him perform at a high-level, two nights running, is truly amazing. Cody did it, and it was a great feeling. I’m proud of him. He’s a star who has become a mega-star.
Dustin continued to praise the accomplishments of his brother, but also pointed out how they are different in some ways.
He said:
We don’t dress the same. Cody is a beautiful suit, while I am a Texas redneck and wear jeans and tee-shirts. I know he is the younger brother but I also ask him for advice. We also learn from each other. Cody’s decision to go out on his own and start AEW, with the Young Bucks, Kenny Omega, and Tony Khan changed everything. Double or Nothing was a game changer for the industry. Look where we are today. Wrestling has exploded.
Dustin’s brother is not a world champion. He’s more of a “true gentleman.”
It was a fantastic weekend. Cody’s greatest quality is not that he is a world champion, but that he has an authentic soul. He is a proud father, and he loves his wife and daughter. Cody is an absolute gentleman. I love him so much and am so proud of him.
Dustin Rhodes is looking to advance his own story as he continues his pursuit of a world championship, something he has not been able to achieve in his 36-year career in the industry. Dustin will wrestle Samoa Joe on AEW Dynamite tonight in an AEW World Title eliminator match. He will earn a future shot at the title if he defeats or draws with the champion within a set time limit.
Joe is a big, strong SOB. I can’t hardly wait to fight him. I’ve been knocked out too many times to count, but I’ve always gotten up. I’m a tough SOB too, and I will fight with all the energy I have.
