Fightful Select reported Sunday that Hardy had allowed his current AEW deal to expire, and opted not sign a new contract offered to him by company. Dave Meltzer, our own Dave Meltzer, has confirmed the news.
Last month, the 49-year old revealed on his podcast that he had been offered a contract by AEW to stay. He said that the contract was for “a few” years, but he is currently weighing his choices.
“I am very happy to have been invited to return to AEW to work for AEW in the near future, but we will see. Right now, I’m weighing my options. Hardy said, “There are a few options out there. I’d say that in the next one month, I’ll know what my immediate career will be.”
Hardy attended the WWE Raw episode on March 18 in North Carolina, his home state. He would later explain his attendance that night along with his wife Reby, was “an innocent thing” as they were invited to sit in a luxury suite by a friend.
Hardy signed his first contract with AEW in the year 2020. He made his debut on Dynamite’s March 18, 2020 episode. Jeff Hardy will join him at the promotion in March 2022.
Matt Hardy’s brother Jeff has been mentioned on WWE programming in recent weeks as part of the promotion of Jimmy vs. Jey uso at WrestleMania forty. Matt vs. Jeff Hardy, and Bret against Owen Hart were the only brother-to-brother matches that took place at Mania.
Hardy’s AEW contract was originally due to expire at the end March, but Fightful reports “word inside the company” that it has been extended for a few more weeks until WrestleMania. It’s unclear if the deal was extended because of time missed by Hardy due to injury, or for any other reason.
