Sunday’s Reigns-Rhodes match will now be played under Bloodline rules.
The Rock won his first advertised match for 11 years on the first night of WWE WrestleMania 40, beating Cody Rhodes, Seth Rollins, and Universal Champion Roman Reigns in the main contest.
After the win, Sunday’s Reigns-Rhodes Universal title match will be played under Bloodline rules. This means that anything can happen.
The match lasted about 45 minutes, plus 20 minutes for introductions. Rock did not hesitate to get in the action despite his long absence from the ring. He entered the ring after a few moments to wrestle Rollins. The crowd’s reaction to Rock’s return was mixed at various points during the match.
The finish saw Rock, 51, pin Rhodes after a Rock Bottom followed by a People’s Elbow. This further sets up what is expected to be a future singles match.
Rock’s last full match was in 2013, when he lost the WWE World title, to John Cena. He returned for an impromptu win of six seconds at WrestleMania32 in 2016.
Rock flaunted his TKO Board status by telling the referee at one point to stop counting or else he would be fired, as all four men brawled around the ring and stadium. Later, when Reigns had Rhodes in the guillotine, Rock held Rhodes’ legs under the ropes while commentary played up the fact that the referee would not do anything to upset him.
Reigns and Rock focused on Rollins left knee in the middle section after Reigns pushed it into the edge the mat. Rollins sold his knee for the duration of the match, which will be part of the Sunday’s World Title defense against Drew McIntyre.
In the final third of the match, there were a number of nearfalls. Rhodes countered a spear with an upper rope Cody Cutter and then a Rollins Frog Splash. A Rollins Stomp/Rhodes Cross Rhodes combination that the fans thought was the finish before Rock removed the referee. Reigns then delivered a low punch to Rhodes, followed by a spear. Rock then threw in the referee and got another nearfall.
Rock then hit his signature spinebuster, but Rhodes countered the People’s Elbow with a cutter. The reaction was mixed.
Even after Reigns hit Rock in the head with a spear, after Rollins had moved Rhodes from the way, there were no signs of dissension among the heels. The two then hit stereo pedigrees to close out another nearfall.
The action spilled outside when Rhodes countered an attempt at a Rock Bottom on a Spanish announce table with his own Rock Bottom delivered on a regular announce table, followed by Reigns spearing Rollins though the short barricade that was in front of ring announcers’ table.
Rhodes seemed to have won the match after hitting two Cross Rhodes, but he was hit in the back with a Rock weightbelt shot which led to a Reigns’ spear. Rock then asked for a tag, which led to the aforementioned Rock Bottoms and People’s Elbows. The match ended at approximately 11:10 pm Eastern.
