Gunther was the WWE Intercontinental champion for 666 days. But now, that historic title run is over.
Sami Zayn won the first night of WrestleMania forty by defeating Gunther. He is now the Intercontinental Champion. Zayn’s refusal to give up in the face of Gunther’s dominance was the story of the match. He finally caught Gunther using a Helluva Kick. He then hit a top-rope brainbuster and delivered two Helluva Kicks for the win.
Zayn’s finisher on the indies was his top rope brainbuster.
Gunther was the longest reigning Intercontinental Champion of WWE history. He won the title by Ricochet in the June 10, 2020 episode of SmackDown.
Gunther vs. Zayn had a special presentation which highlighted Zayn’s role as the babyface underdog. Zayn talked with his son and wife backstage before the match. Zayn was then encouraged by Kevin Owens and Chayn Gable.
Gable reminded Zayn of a favor he owes during their pre-match conversation. Gable was Zayn’s trainer on WWE TV leading up to WrestleMania. Gable is likely to be in contention to face Zayn for the title.
Bronson Reed could be another Zayn challenger after WrestleMania. Reed stated that he was looking forward to the Gunther and Zayn IC Title match after winning the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal.
