Shawn Michaels was impressed by the talent of the AEW roster.
Michaels participated in a NXT Stand & Deliver press conference on Friday. Michaels was asked by a member of the media if he had any AEW talent he’d love to see in NXT. Michael didn’t list names because he didn’t want to get anyone in trouble. He said that there is so much talent within AEW. He would take “darn close to anyone.”
Michaels praised Shawn Spears, a former AEW wrestler, in his answer. He called him a “formidable dude, who is secure and professional.” Spears returned to NXT in February after leaving AEW back in December 2023.
Michaels said:
I guess I’m always going back to – i would take just about anyone. I’ll just say that I can’t name names because I believe there is so much talent. I don’t know where to put names. I don’t understand everyone’s situation. I don’t want to get anyone into trouble. There are a lot of guys who used to be NXT that I’ve always admired. I don’t watch as much as i would like.
I love to work with young talent. I especially enjoy it when I get the chance to know them, and understand their passion. It’s hard to tell if you’re the one I’m going to work hard for until I know your goals in this industry. It’s personal to me at that level. There are people who I see as talented and think, “Oh my goodness, what a lot of talent they have.” If we ever had the chance to work with these people, I believe we could do something really special.
Shawn Spears was the person we got. I had worked with him a little in NXT, before he was called up. But I liked him because he always seemed like a professional, formidable dude who could do anything you asked.
We enjoy working with anyone and everyone, trying to make them more successful than they were before. You can be a recent college graduate or have had a previous promotion. I know that if I give NXT a chance to work with me, I believe we can help you get closer to your goals, and to what you want to achieve in this business, than anyone else. We work hard to achieve this goal, because that’s what NXT does. We’re happy to do that, whether it be AEW, Japan, TNA or anywhere else in the world. I’m excited about NXT’s ability to improve anyone’s career and give them the chance to enjoy weekends such as the one we are about to have.
Spears will face Joe Gacy at the NXT Stand & Deliver Pre-show on Saturday. The pre-show starts at 11 a.m. Eastern time, and the main event begins at noon. The event will be streamed live on Peacock/WWE Network.
Michaels has been working in NXT and in charge of the brand, since 2021. His WWE job title is Senior Vice President for Talent Development Creative.
