Nigel McGuinness claims he recently returned to the ring.
The 48-year old hasn’t wrestled in 2011 and is now a member of the AEW Collision broadcast team. He began working as a ROH commentator later that same year. He now works for the AEW Collision team, where he is often heard making derogatory remarks about Bryan Danielson.
McGuinness was a guest on Wrestling Weekly and, while discussing his attitude towards Danielson, he mentioned that he had gotten back into a ring and felt “perfectly fine.”
McGuinness said
I remember how difficult it was to be in WWE. I also remember the… I don’t think it was bitterness or jealousy, but those were the emotions that existed between me and Bryan because of his success.
It was difficult for me to accept the success and fame of my WWE peers.
I was glad to still be able to wrestle today. I felt fine when I got into the ring. Some people say that it is easier to quit if you do it yourself, but I don’t believe this.
He continued:
Due to my history of concussions, and other things, I watch a lot matches and think, ‘couldn’t do that anymore.
McGuinness took to Twitter in 2018 to correct the misconception that his retirement was caused by injuries. He wrote: “Just for the records, as some people appear misinformed, it was never my intention to retire due to injuries. I always felt ok to wrestle.”
Danielson and McGuinness had a fierce rivalry from 2006 to 2008, primarily in Ring of Honor. Their most memorable match took place in 2006 at ROH Unified, which was held in Liverpool. Danielson defeated McGuinness to unify ROH World and Pure titles that night. Dave Meltzer, our own Dave Meltzer, gave the match a rating of four and three quarter stars.
