Mercedes Mone and Tony Khan met with the media following last night’s AEW Big Business.
Mone talks to Sports Illustrated in regards to her signing with AEW, and the injury she sustained at NJPW’s Strong Resurgence in May.
Mone said
The women’s division is the reason I’m here. The women who are here laid the foundation. They’re why I want to be part of AEW. We’re going make so much magic.
She would later add that
This is a global movement, and that’s why i’m here. You don’t believe I can bring this to the world? Let me prove you wrong. My heart is here. My dreams are here. I love wrestling. I’m a good leader and I’m going lead.
Mone’s debut was the opening of Wednesday’s show. She returned in the main-event segment to rescue Willow Nightingale, who had been attacked by Skye Blue and Julia Hart.
“F— yeah, i needed to open the Show,” said Mone before adding:
I was full of energy all day. I was in gorilla ten minutes before the show. I could feel the energy. When my music started, I felt energy and knew I was at home.
Since last year, I’ve been thinking about the words I wanted to use. When I signed with AEW I gave it even more thought. I decided to speak my heart out. The crowd was so supportive, it made the experience even more special. Boston was the beginning of everything. I wouldn’t have become ‘The Chief Executive’ without my time in Boston.
Mone also spoke of the injury she sustained in May, and how it was told that her “career would be over.”
She said:
I had an MRI in may, and the surgeon said, “This is career-ending. It was the biggest surprise of my life. I’d never been injured this badly before. My worst injury was Hell in a Cell in 2019 when my pelvis was displaced for eight months. This was much more painful. They thought it was a broken foot. I was not allowed to lift any weights for three months. Every day was a battle.
When I was told that I would never return, it was devastating. I told my surgeon that I knew I would return. Now that I’m well, my surgeon calls his mentor and says, “Look what happened here, this is incredible.” I don’t want to be told no. I always thought I would be returning, and it’s now true.
Tony Khan also spoke to The Boston Globe regarding Mone’s debut with Big Business.
Khan said:
I think she is one of the best female wrestlers in all the world.
“I always want the best wrestlers to join AEW and Mercedes fits that description perfectly.”
All of this was pure speculation. There was a bit of buzz on the internet where they put “Bo$$ton” on the Boston skyline and fans speculated that it could be me. They came from around the world to watch me debut tonight. It was incredible. It was incredible. I am over the moon.
