WWE 2K24 Review: Don’t fix something that isn’t broken in todays Wrestling news

The video game 2K24 from this year’s WWE is not that different from the one released last year. This is good news for a series that was still recovering from 2K20’s poor reception. 2K23 was an important step in the right directions. There aren’t many major changes but there are enough improvements and additions to make 2K24 a better WWE game than previous years.
The gameplay is similar to last year’s title with a few additions. A new mini-game that allows players to perform a strong-style of battle of strikes can appear during matches. These appear out of nowhere and I did not like them because they took me away from the game. The new feature that is more welcome is the ability to stack three finishers in order to unleash a dramatic super finisher.
This year, new match types include gauntlet matches, caskets, ambulances, and special referees. Guest referee was the most entertaining mode to play with. There’s also a referee rating system that grades the player based on their performance as a match official. If the score drops too low, a new referee is brought in to finish the match. This can be turned off, allowing for some hilarious hijinks. Backstage Brawls have also been improved, with elevators and vending machine added. These matches are a lot of fun, as it’s easy to powerbomb opponents and throw them off scaffolds.
MyRise, like last year, has two different storylines. Unleashed follows a female independent talent who is trying to make it to WWE and Unrivaled pits a character against a male in a storyline that involves the Undisputed WWE championship after Roman Reigns vacates the title in shock to pursue Hollywood dreams. 2K has put a lot of work into these stories. There are many different paths you can choose to change the direction of the story. There are even cameos by characters from last year’s story mode.
Showcase mode has the same issues that have plagued 2K for years. This year’s focus is on 40 Years of WrestleMania. Relive some of WWE’s greatest WrestleMania moments. The problem is that some matches, particularly more recent ones, aren’t memorable and are used more because they are readily available. This becomes more evident when footage of fans, referees and others not under contract with WWE is blurred. It’s still a chore to go through a checklist in order to unlock all unlockables.
MyGM and Universe are the same modes as they have been in the past couple of years. Universe allows you to watch computer-simulated matches and premium live events, or take control of a wrestler and follow them through shows as they develop rivalries. MyGM allows players to take on the role of General Manager for a brand and compete against other GMs. There are some new GMs and other additions, such as the ability to trade talents after premium live events. It’s always fun to experiment and play with these.
MyFaction is a live service mode that allows you to assemble teams and open cards to play against CPU or real opponents online. You can earn rewards for logging in daily, and you can use real money to buy more powerful cards. This mode isn’t for me but there’s plenty of content for those interested in this type.
WWE 2K24 has a lot of positives. The Showcase mode is still a problem, but the story modes and new match types make it worth the time. There is still much to fix, but this is a year where the 2K series is adamant about not fixing what isn’t wrong.
