The NJPW star is now officially under AEW’s contract. He made his debut as a member of the main roster on Dynamite this past Wednesday, aligning himself with The Young Bucks to form a new version The Elite after Matt & Nick Jackson dismissed Kenny Omega & Hangman Page.
In a detailed article published on Friday, SI’s Justin Barrasso said that Okada chose AEW because he wanted to be part of a WrestleMania. He also stated that WWE was a real consideration.
Barrasso cited sources from both AEW & NJPW that Okada believes his best chance to succeed is at his new promotional home. This will not force him or his family to leave Japan if that’s what they want to do.
Then there’s the long-standing relationship he has with the Jackson brothers. The robes that the Jackson brothers wore to challenge Sting and Darby Allin in last Sunday’s Revolution had an Easter egg hidden inside. They were both custom-made by Okada after he became free agent, and were inspired by him.
Barrasso reported that Okada had a lot of trust in AEW’s Tony Khan, who signed him for a multi-million dollar contract over multiple years. According to the report it was Khan, with the agreement of Omega, the Jacksons and Okada that decided Okada would debut as a heel, with the natural rivalry between Omega and Okada resuming in the future.
The new version The Elite will debut in the ring this Saturday at AEW Collision, which takes place from Duluth Georgia. Okada will likely first fight Eddie Kingston, after he fought Kingston during his appearance on Wednesday.
