Graves said Triple H allows announcers to develop their style more freely.

Since Paul “Triple H’ Levesque” has taken over Vince McMahon as WWE commentator, Corey Graves believes he can be himself.

Graves was interviewed recently by the Short and to the Point Podcast. Graves talked about the support Levesque has given him throughout his WWE career. Graves said the space Levesque allows WWE announcers in order to develop their style has been a “sort of refreshing.”

Triple H is a guy to whom I owe much, if not all, of my career. He was the first to take a chance on my wrestling career in NXT. I know we’ve talked a few times since then – and that his having to shut down me broke his heart just as much as mine. He has always been silently supportive. I’ve never hesitated asking him for help if I needed it. He is also really cool and refreshing in the sense that he gives [announcers] their space.

Instead of being told, “Hey, say this, do it this way, use this language,” he understands, I believe, that we are all fans, and we love this in our own ways. As the business grows, you have to let go a bit of the reins. I still have my guiderails, but I feel they’re a bit wider now on each side. I can be myself and develop my style without having to stick to a specific path, walk in a particular rhythm, or do things in a specific way. As long as the boxes that must be checked are checked, I do not have to do it the same way as the six guys who came before me or Michael Cole or etcetera.

Graves then was asked how it felt to have Levesque in a headset.

I’ve been on television for, I believe, seven years, on Raw and SmackDown. In the last few weeks, my headsets seem to be as clear and quiet as ever. I only hear him if something is wrong with me, which, knock on wood, doesn’t happen very often. Or, if a joke works, I will hear him fairly regularly. If I say something that makes him laugh, he’ll tell me, “Oh, that was great.” Or he will double down. He will repeat my joke on my headset. Sometimes I think, “Oh man, I wish I could say this to the people but it just doesn’t fit.”

Graves and Wade Barrett make up WWE’s SmackDown commentary team. Graves was promoted to the role of lead play-byplay voice for the show last month. He was previously a color commentary.
