The Young Bucks were defeated by Sting & Darby Alin to retain the AEW Tag-Team Titles.

Sting and Darby Allin defeated the Young Bucks to retain the AEW tag team titles in Sting’s retirement match.

Sting made Matt Jackson tap out to the Scorpion Death Lock to end a brutal bout that included ladders, table bumps, and real glass panes.

The 64-year old will now retire from the sport as a champion, with the future of titles still in question.

As in previous matches, the match was played under tornado rules. This meant that anything went. Sting and Allin, along with Sting’s sons, brought out the glass from underneath the ring.

Sting has taken his share of punishment in these bouts where anything goes, including a suplex by Matt Jackson through two side-byside tables which took him out of action for a while.
The Bucks took out Ricky Steamboat after he tried to stop them from using the title belt. Ric Flair then entered the ring to shield Sting only to be superkicked. Steamboat was also superkicked when he made his move up to the apron.

Sting, with Allin injured and kicking out after a second EVP, fought back several times. He then took a superkick, and was about take a TK Driver when Allin returned and threw Nick Jackson through a ringside desk. Sting delivered a Scorpion Death Drop on Matt Jackson. This was followed by an Allin Coffin Drop and a Scorpion Death Lock.

Sting had a 27-0 record since his debut at the March 2021 Revolution, all in traditional tag teams, trios, and eight-man match. He and Allin won the titles early-February, and this is their first defense.

The post-match

Allin then got on the microphone and said that there were three minutes left of the PPV, and he wanted the fans show their appreciation. Sting thanked the fans, as he had done since 1988, and also Flair. He wanted fans to have a night that they would never ever forget, just as it was for him.

Sting then put Allin over him, asking how many stitches Allin might need tonight. He then said that he saw in Allin a risk taker and that he was still a gambler, which the fans responded.

The rest of Sting’s promo did not air on PPV because the feed cut off after he said that he was waiting for the time to be called. AEW posted some of the missing promotional material on X later, as seen below.

After Sting finished, the entire locker-room came out on stage to applaud him, which was also not seen on television.

The intro

Flair and Steamboat appeared before the introductions. They joined several other wrestlers who were already present at the ringside, including Nikita Kooff, Scott Riggs and Magnum TA.

After Allin’s intro, a montage was shown of Sting’s career. It included still photos from WCW and footage from matches in NJPW as well as AEW. TNA or WWE footage was not shown. Sting is shown watching the movie in an empty cinema, and he does his catchphrase “It’s Showtime” and his traditional yell.

The two sons dressed in Sting’s Great American Bash inspired gear and the other in WCW Wolfpack attire, came out before Sting began to play Metallica’s “Seek and Destroy.” The sons got in on the action and sprayed Stinger on both Bucks for being attacked a few weeks ago.

Jim Ross and Tony Schiavone provided commentary for Excalibur. They were notable because they called Sting and Ric Flair’s famous March 1988 Clash of the Champions match in the same building.
