The Hollywood Reporter published an article today that revealed new details about Vince McMahon’s resignation from TKO Group Holdings.
The report cites several sources that state the graphic details of Janel Grant’s suit against WWE, McMahon and John Lauriniatis caught top TKO executives off guard. The report also mentions that Mark Shapiro, Ari Emanuel and others called McMahon the day after the suit was filed and asked him to resign.
Alex Weprin, The Hollywood Reporter, wrote:
McMahon had left TKO by the time the Royal Rumble started, and it seemed that he was gone for good. (TKO) wanted to distance itself from McMahon’s alleged transgressions in the past.
These concerns culminated on the evening of January 26, when Emanuel, TKO President and COO Mark Shapiro contacted McMahon to tell him that it would be best for the company if he resigned. He accepted and submitted his resignation.
TKO was said to have been influenced by the fact that Slim Jim pulled their sponsorship of the Royal Rumble after Grant’s lawsuit.
TKO also contacted WWE’s broadcast partners after hearing about the lawsuit.
Sources claim that TKO executives contacted all of their rights partners as soon as the news broke. They were aware of the importance of keeping them informed.
According to a source, had Grant’s suit been filed earlier, a $5 billion deal between Netflix and Netflix could have been in jeopardy.
Multiple sources have stated that the graphic content of the lawsuit caught TKO executives as well as WWE talent off guard.
