UFC 297 crowned new middleweight and women’s bantamweight champs.
In the main event on Saturday’s card Dricus Du Plessis defeated Sean Strickland in a very close fight (47-48; 48-47; 48-47). He became the new UFC Middleweight Champion. Du Plessis became South Africa’s first UFC champion with the win. The match was also awarded Fight of the Night.
After the fight du Plessis called former champion Israel Adesanya. Strickland thanked Canada for his part in the post-fight interview.
Strickland, who had held the title for 132 consecutive days, lost it on his first defence. He defeated Adesanya in UFC 293 last September 10.
Raquel Pennington won the UFC women’s bantamweight title for the first ever in the co-main fight. She defeated Mayra bueno Silva with a unanimous decision (49 46, 49 46, 49 45) by a unanimous decision. Pennington stated in her post-fight interview that she had climbed mountains to get where she is and urged anyone who has been told they can’t pursue their dreams to keep believing.
Amanda Nunes, who vacated the women’s featherweight and bantamweight titles in June last year, had left the women’s title vacant.
