Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has signed up to play MMA legend Mark Kerr.

A24 Films (the company behind Iron Claw) announced on Monday they will collaborate with Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions in order to produce a film based on Kerr’s life. Seven Bucks Productions announced plans for the movie in 2019. Kerr had given his blessing to the project.

The film will borrow its title from a 2002 HBO document on Kerr, titled “The Smashing Machine,” that covered his career and struggle to overcome addiction to pain medications.

Benny Safdie, director and writer of Uncut Gems, will write and direct the film.

“Dwayne’s and Benny’s shared vision of Mark’s inspiring tale is electrifying. Noah Sacco, A24’s Noah Sacco, said: “We are deeply honored to be able to work with them to bring this incredibly special story to life.”

Kerr was a regular at Pride FC between 1998 and 2001. He won the UFC 14 and 15 tournaments.
