NJPW introduces IWGP Global Championship to Wrestle Kingdom 18. in todays Wrestling news
The inaugural champion is set to be crowned on January 4.
NJPW will introduce a Global Championship. The first title holder is set to be crowned during Wrestle Kingdom 18.
The promotion announced in a Monday press conference that the first IWGP Global Heavyweight champion will be decided by the three-way match between Jon Moxley and Will Ospreay & David Finlay at Wrestle kingdom.
The new title replaces the now-defunct IWGP United States/United Kingdom Heavyweight Championship. This title was abolished after Power Struggle, in November, when Finlay destroyed title belts worn by Ospreay and Moxley challenged Ospreay to Wrestle Kingdom.
NJPW released an official statement attributed by NJPW Chairman Naoki Sugabayashi, explaining the decision of naming the new title.
In July 2017, the IWGP US Heavyweight Championship was created to mark NJPW’s first major event in America. It took place in Long Beach. After its introduction, the IWGP US Heavyweight Championship became the symbol for NJPW competitions in the USA.
In the years to come, the title was defended in Japan and became familiar to Japanese fans. The IWGP UK Championship was introduced this summer and caused confusion among fans.
This new championship will combine and add to the US Championship and UK Championship roles and be called the IWGP Global Heavyweight Championship. NJPW, as discussed in its recent business strategy presentation has been working to grow their presence not only in the UK and US but also in Europe, Asia, and Oceania by 2024.
In order to reflect the new international focus, it was discussed whether the IWGP Intercontinental Championship should be revived. However, as we are now seeing a whole new level of involvement on the international stage, the IWGP Global Heavyweight title was deemed the best fit. We hope that fans will be excited to see the new title and the matches for it.
The first IWGP Global Heavyweight champion will be determined by the January 4th three-way at Wrestle kingdom between Will Ospreay and Jon Moxley. Thank you
