Swerve Strickland recently spoke to AEW Full Gear about his tributes to Bray Wyatt.
Strickland wore tights with red and black stripes, reminiscent of The Fiend, for his match against Hangman page on the show. He would reveal on Instagram later that the gear was meant as a tribute to Wyatt.
During a recent conversation with Sam Roberts Strickland talked about being influenced Wyatt, and his decision to pay homage to him at AEW full gear.
“I remember that when the Fiend really started, there was a lot talk about if it was for them or if they were a fan. And I said, “No, this is brilliant.” I don’t believe people appreciated the brilliance he brought to the screen, and the risk he took too,” Strickland stated of Wyatt.
“I thought he was ahead his time in a lot of ways and I wanted to show my appreciation for the love and influence that wasn’t lost.”
“I was in the locker rooms with him when I was doing 205. He was always giving me hugs. “At one point, I had to help with the Fiend Mask (laughs).
“He was always an excellent brother in the locker rooms.” He was cool, he was fun,” Strickland added.
“I love horror and I was really happy to see it brought to the screen by an industry I love. I thought that was revolutionary, and I wanted to incorporate a little bit of that into my work that night. If anything, I feel that his spirit powered the match.”
Strickland, after his victory over Page at Full Gear entered the Continental Classic. He is currently 2-0 with wins over Jay Lethal, and Jay White. On tonight’s Montreal show, he will wrestle Mark Briscoe (0-2).
