The attorney for Vince McMahon responded to a lawsuit filed on Wednesday.
Jessica Rosenberg, McMahon’s attorney, released a statement in response to Brandon Thurston, denying the allegations made by five survivors of ‘ringboy scandal’. They are suing McMahon and Linda McMahon as well as WWE/TKO, claiming negligence for not doing anything to stop the sexual abuse of boys underage perpetrated by Mel Phillips. Phillips was both an announcer, and the head of the crew, during the 1980s.
Rosenberg’s statement states that “more than 30 years ago the columnist Phil Mushnick made headlines with the same false claims.” “These allegations were never proved and became the subject matter of a defamation suit against Mr. Mushnick.” The negligence claims that were made against Mr. McMahon today are based on the same absurd, defamatory, and utterly unjustified statements made by Mr. Mushnick. We will vigorously represent Mr. McMahon, and we are confident that the court will find these claims untrue and without foundation.”
The first time the ring boy scandal was made public was in 1992. Phillips, Terry Garvin and Pat Patterson were fired from WWE because of the allegations. Patterson was later hired back and remained with the company until his death in 2020.
The lawsuit claims the survivors, named John Does 1-5, learned about the extent of knowledge that the McMahons had regarding the abuse because of the lawsuit Janel Grant brought in January accusing Vince McMahon sexual abuse and human trafficking. The Justice Department is continuing its investigation into McMahon, which has halted the lawsuit.
