The increasingly violent rivalry of former AEW world champions Swerve Strickland with Hangman Page appeared to have come to an end at Saturday’s All Out, when Page defeated his opponent via referee stopping in their unannounced cage match.
Page ended the match by removing Strickland’s decorative gold grill from his teeth, sticking a hypodermic syringe into his mouth and then hitting him with a hard chairshot to the head. The referee called the match.
Page left the ring after winning the bout, but Strickland remained motionless as officials attended to him. Page let out an emotional yell when he scored his first victory against Strickland – albeit one which doesn’t count since the bout wasn’t sanctioned and was under “lights out”.
**********
Strickland attacked Page before the match started as the cage was falling from the ceiling. He threatened to crush Page, who escaped the cage before it could crush Page.
The unofficial bout began with Page using staple guns, but Strickland turned the tables on him by stapling pictures of his family to Page’s face and then ripping them off.
Chairs, barbed wire and a table were also used. Strickland lawn-darted Page into a seat wedged between the turnbuckles at one point and pulled a cinderblock from a crate placed in the ring prior to the match. After a struggle with Page, Strickland slammed him back-first onto the block using a vertebraker. This aggravated his already bruised back.
Page then tried to use a piece charred wood from Strickland’s house, which he had burned last Wednesday, to stab Strickland. Strickland stopped him and repeatedly stabbed Page’s head. Strickland tried to use it again but Page power bombed and low-blow him onto the cinderblock.
It was a new chapter in a rivalry dating back almost a year.
Strickland and Strickland first faced off at WrestleDream in October, which he won. They then had their Texas Death Matches at Full Gear in November, which Strickland again won. The two then fought in a 30-minute draw at a February Dynamite, which led to their inclusion in a three way with the then-World champion Samoa Joe. At March’s Revolution, the champion retained his title. Both men were on opposing teams in this year’s Blood & Guts.
Page, who had earlier appeared in the Casino gauntlet fight, tried to interfere with the match. Strickland lost his AEW World Title to Bryan Danielson last month at All In. Page wins his third straight AEW Singles match.
