After failing to sign up for the Buffalo Bills’ practice squad, Gable Steveson, a former WWE wrestler, is unsure of his next career move.
Steveson was released from the Bills on Tuesday as the team reduced its roster to the NFL limit of 53 players. Steveson was not claimed by any other team, and he wasn’t signed to the Bills 16-player practice squad. Bills general manger Brandon Beane expressed his hope that Steveson pursues a football career and did not rule him out of the team in future.
Steveson had no previous football experience and was a longshot to make the Bills’ roster. He played three preseason matches for the team in this season. Beane said Steveson was a hard worker, had good football intuition, and improved “a lot” during training camp.
Steveson, a former Olympic gold-medalist and outstanding amateur wrestler from the University of Minnesota was signed by WWE in 2021. He was released this May. Steveson’s only televised match was a double-countout against Baron Corbin in NXT Great American Bash, 2023. His performance was not well received by fans.
Steveson, 24, was trying to get a job with the Bills in the position of defensive tackle. Steveson would have been able to continue to practice with the team and the Bills could have promoted him to the active roster if he had been placed on the Bills’ practice squad.
