Taichi defeated SHO and regained the championship.

On the road to WrestleKingdom, one of NJPW’s titles changed hands last Friday.

Taichi defeated SHO in the New Japan Road event held on Friday in Yamagata to win the provisional KOPW 2023 Championship. SHO held the KOPW championship since he won it from Taichi in Kobe last September.

SHO stacked rules in his favor for their rematch. Yoshinobu Kannemaru was the special referee. He is a member of House of Torture, which includes SHO. Taichi was also prohibited from using his signature moves during the match. The loser was also not allowed to wrestle in Yamagata ever again.

Red Shoes Unno, the referee who bumped the referee, counted the pin and gave Taichi the win. Taichi got some help from his Just Five Guys teammates to defeat House of Torture.

In a promo released after the match, Taichi stated that he will continue to defend the KOPW title until 2023. Taichi said that he had a business with Kanemaru to settle.

Kanemaru, who betrayed Just Five Guys to join House of Torture at Destruction at Kobe and then joined House of Torture in Kobe to become SHO, caused Taichi to lose his KOPW title.

After the final title match in 2023, the KOPW champion will be declared official for the year. A new champion will be crowned in 2024.
